about

‘Moonglades’ is a collaboration between composer/producer Raven Bush and choreographer and dance artist Coral Dolphin, comprising a dance film, an accompanying score and sample library.

Over a series of musical and physical movements, Raven and Coral weave together a breath-taking story about interiority and transformation.

The film was written in July of 2019 and shot the first week of March of 2020 under lockdown conditions, with Raven and Coral working remotely from London and New York, respectively. Coral directed the film and choreographed the troupe of 8 dancers involved whilst Raven composed an accompanying score combining electronic and acoustic sounds. It was edited virtually over shared screens. “Moon glade is the bright reflection of moonlight on a body of water. We chatted about the body of water representing separation and the moon representing connection. No matter where you are across the ocean and globe, you will always see the moon. Love and connection has become extremely vital during this time, so the title just clicked” says Coral.

Speaking of her inspiration behind the direction and choreography, Coral says; “I wanted the dancers to symbolize a ‘corrupted, collective, consciousness’. I wanted their mental dysfunctions to represent the dehumanization, suffrage, pain and un-healing caused by the effects of systematic indoctrination on an extreme level. From Stephanie, the lead dancer’s perspective, metaphorically speaking, the dancers are that exact experience happening to her. In other words, the dancers are the pain, suffrage, un-healing and indoctrination happening to her in a dream-like flashback and at the end she frees herself. In the words of Marcus Garvey; "We are going to emancipate ourselves from the mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind". I like to believe that Marcus Garvey felt there was a deeper freedom that we all possess and the first change towards that freedom takes place in the mind. The deconstruction and rewiring of our minds go deeper than flesh however.

The emotive sonic world created by Raven through the accompanying score has also been distilled into a brand new sample library, made in collaboration with Spitfire Audio. The Moonglades library captures Bush’s mastery and unique approach to creating, recording and sampling, made up of unconventional techniques performed on his baritone and 5-string violins, sounds from his rare synth collection and percussion brought to life with detailed programming to create inspiring textures and loops.
